During the beginning of the 21st century, Americans have begun to consume more food and several hundred more calories per person per day than did their counterparts in the late 1950s. What's surprising is that last century was the lowest in calorie consumption ever. The food industry has made it even easier to sell cheaply made food to US citizens targeting to just everyone that sees their advertisement. ERS data suggest
that average daily calorie intake increased
by 24.5 percent, or about 530
calories, between 1970 and 2000. (USDA). So much of our food and beverages are just full of sugar and calories that it has become a great health concern in the past years. Another concern to think about is that we consume much more refined grain products rather than eating whole grains. According to the National Center for
Health Statistics, an astounding 62 percent
of adult Americans were overweight
in 2000, up from 46 percent in 1980. Twenty-seven percent of adults were so
far overweight that they were classified
as obese (at least 30 pounds above their
healthy weight)—twice the percentage
classified as such in 1960. (USDA)
A major warning is that even kids are becoming obese at a young age. 33% of kids are struggling with being overweight or being obese. About 2/3 of adults are either overweight or obese. If the obesity rate stays consistent, in the year 2030 more than half of the US population will be obese. (USDA). We aren't eating healthy anymore like we did a century ago. The number of people eating unhealthy foods over organic foods has increased at a alarming rate to the point where even kids started to develop diabetes for how much food they consume. On average, only 2% of all children in the US eat a healthy diet. (unity point). Sadly for those that are obese have a high risk factor to contract heart disease.
